2.1 Instructional Services
Wake Tech Libraries offer tours and instructional classes on the use of library resources – print materials, electronic databases, and virtual reference services. Classes can be conducted in the library or in a classroom setting. To best utilize the college’s resources, the preferred location for library instruction sessions will be SMART classrooms. By conducting library sessions in these classrooms, it has been shown that students are better focused and are able to apply the information literacy skills learned to future research projects. For example, if your class is located in a SMART classroom, the librarian will come to you to conduct the library instruction session.
Librarians are available to design and teach instruction sessions tailored to fit the specific research and curricular needs of the students, as well as workshop and training needs for the faculty and staff. Sessions include, but are not limited to, guided hands-on practice with information technology - electronic database/online virtual reference searching demonstrations, and search strategy workshops for faculty, staff, and students.
- At least one week notice is required before the requested class and/or workshop date(s)
- There will be only ONE class scheduled in the library at any given time.
- Wake Tech libraries would like the instructor (or a colleague) to accompany the class for scheduled library instruction sessions
- If an instructor has the students working on a specific assignment, please provide a copy of the assignment to the librarian assigned to the class (preferable via email prior to the date of instruction).
- Library instruction sessions are NOT scheduled, until the instructor receives an appointment confirmation (via email) from the librarian assigned to the class.
- Faculty, staff, students and other library users can request one-on-one tutorials to the libraries’ electronic databases, virtual reference services, and/or a general tour of the library
- Wake Tech libraries will NOT reserve computers for student research. Instructors, on the Main campus, who would like to provide students class time to conduct their research, need to contact Lorianne Robinson (lprobinson@waketech.edu or 919-866-5717) to reserve one of the computer labs on campus. Please notify the library, if you would like to request that a librarian be present to answer research questions during this time.
- Faculty and staff are encouraged to fill out the online Information Excursions Bibliographic Instruction Request form to request instructional classes and/or workshops, as needed. This form can be found on the libraries’ Web page at http://library.waketech.edu/bi_request.php

With the expansion of Wake Tech Libraries to a fourth campus, instructors teaching classes at off-site (community) locations, who would like to request library instruction, need to bring their class(es) to one of the four campus libraries or request an information literacy tutorial (available in electronic format). Tutorials can be customized to your students’ research needs to make the presentation more relevant for your class. For more information, please call: 919-866-5643.
2.2 Copier Services
Wake Tech Libraries provide vendor-operated copy machines for photocopying. The libraries comply and support the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, United States), which supports the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyright materials. Copies of these restrictions are available at the library and posted near copy machines.
2.3 Interlibrary Loans
Materials not available in the Wake Tech Libraries may be available from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan Service. Library account holders may request books from other libraries within the North Carolina Community College System. The Wake Tech Libraries have signed a library cooperative agreement with libraries that make up the Community College Libraries in North Carolina Consortium (CCLINC) and follow the established CCLINC Interlibrary Loan Policies.
The Wake Tech Libraries also participate in the institutional loan policy to obtain materials from the State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, following the established policies of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources.
Estimated time for item arrival through state courier service is three to five days. The item is held for one week. Videos and audio books are generally not lent through interlibrary loan.
2.4 Reserves
In-house Reserves
In order to assure access to select materials, the library will, at the
instructor’s request, place books, audiovisual items, and any other
materials on reserve. The instructor must establish a library account before
placing items on reserve. Reserves are kept at the Circulation Desk and
are available to students, faculty, staff, and community library users.
The length of time materials are available is determined by the instructor.
Items on reserve may be accessed at the Circulation Desk, in the Reserves List binder by the instructor’s name or subject/curriculum heading or on the online catalog.
Designated times are:
Closed Reserve: In-library use only. (Most audiovisual items are placed on Closed Reserve. Exceptions are made for faculty.)
Overnight Reserve: Must be returned the following day.
A Reserve Request List (WTCC Form 1037 or the online Reserve Materials Form) must be completed listing items on reserve and time limits materials are available. Instructors are asked to submit the request at least three working days before sending students to use the materials.
Electronic Reserves
At the request of instructors, library staff can place approved documents
online for student access. These documents include materials such as class
handouts and articles. Students can access these materials 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week through the Web site at home or on campus. These reserves
are password protected to comply with copyright laws. To access these
materials, students can receive the user name and password information
from their instructor or a library staff member. Electronic reserve items
are available through the library’s Web site.
2.5 Web Support
The library Web site provides support for students through a variety of resources, in particular the Disability Support, Distance Learning, and Contact Us pages.
The Disability Support page provides information on library equipment and services available to students with disabilities, as well as links to disability-related Web resources.
The Distance Learning Support page provides information on library resources and services for distance learning students. These resources include instructions for accessing the library catalog, and electronic databases and contact information for the Distance Education department. In addition, an online form [currently being revised] is provided for distance students to request a library card.
To encourage feedback from library patrons, the library Web site provides a Contact Us page with an e-mail form for submitting questions and suggestions. In addition, the phone numbers and e-mail addresses of each staff member are provided on the Staff page.
